What Exactly is Roleplaying? what is roleplaying, exactly? roleplaying is like shared story-telling, with everybody changing the plot and adding details. there's many kind of roleplaying, like live action roleplaying, organized virtual games, or through a form or chat.
the plots are different depending on what your roleplaying, and here on moon and stars we have one conjoined roleplaying site. need mroe details? ask here or private message me c:

Talk the Talk there are many words that newbies might not understand on roleplays. here are just a few common words you may see around here c:
OOC - this means ''out of character.'' it's used when players say something about them, but not as character. it's used sometimes in [ ] or in { } or ( ). really just depends on the player.
MarySue/GarySue - similar to god-modding, a character who is perfect in every way, either by complete beauty, no weaknesses, and perfect personalities, super strength, and information on everything. realistic characters do have flaws, so dont use any of these in your forms.
Power-playing - powerplaying means taking control of somebody's character without permission. let's say you're a loner on breezeclan territory. you describe your character as liking to be alone, but then somebody else makes your character happy to see them. that's an example of power-playing. though, taking small amount of minor power-playing is completely fine. (ex: player 1 makes their cat say something funny. says player 2's character chuckles)
God-Moding - the worst of them all is god-modding. this is when the character is invincible, all-powerful and all-knowing. These characters know things they shouldn't be able to, can do things they shouldn't be able to, and can't seem to get hurt. they do sometimes have ''flaws'' but they generally seem to not affect them at all.

Good Roleplay Behavior good roleplay behavior is a must, and here's some things you shouldnt do while roleplaying.
Roleplay isn't a reality. let's say player 1 calls player 2's chaarcter ''mouse-brain'' or picks a fight with the character. don't take it seriously, it's just in the roleplay. they aren't saying it to you.
Spam spam isn't good for a roleplay. every off-topic post makes it harder for somebody to catch up, and can create confusion. a example of spam is saying what you did today, or asking about the weather.
Nobody is Perfect ocassionally, you'll find a roleplay on a thread who types less than you, or doesnt have the ebst grammar. just remember to encourage them, and dont get mad if they dont reply quick enough. after all, this is just roleplaying!

Powerplaying and God-Moding here's a more detailed guide to powerplaying and god-moding is. make sure to NOT do this.
Powerplaying powerplaying is when you take control of another person's character. Let's look at an example.
Roleplayer 1 cora narrowed her eyes, flicking her tail. she saw an approaching cat, reeking of clan scent. she was never a cat that liked others, and she hissed softly as she thought of what might happen. she hoped the cat didnt see her, after all, she wanted to be alone.
Roleplayer 2 littlefoot trotted happily in the clearing, happy to hear the birds chirping. she suddenly saw a cat in a bush, and she mewled happily. '' hello! what's your name? i'm littlefoot! '' as she mewed, she jumped up in the air and grabbed a bird from the tree, padding closer. the cat smiled at her, mewing. '' i'm cora! nice to meet you! ''
as you can see, roleplayer 1 wouldnt have wanted that to happen. but roleplayer 2 took complete control of cora's answer.
but this isn't the only way you can powerplay. here's another example.
Roleplayer 2
she trotted happily in the clearing, but it was cut short when a cat lept from the bushes and pounced on her, biting and clawing her neck. littlefoot shrieked in pain, flailing her paws all over the place.
this is more what cora might have done, but roleplayer 2 took control of cora's actions. but it doesn't matter if it's accurate or not. roleplayer 2 took away what roleplayer 1 could have done.
powerplaying is pretty easy to avoid, though. special care should be used in fights. it's hard to not say '' shadow delievered a cirppling blow! '' but that doesn't give the other person to have a chance to dodge or block your attacks. instead of saying '' he gouged out his eye '' you should say '' he swiped his paw, hoping to claw his eye. ''
The only time it is acceptable to control another player’s character is when they have given you permission to do so. Usually, these situations involve very simple actions where allowing you to control the other character will help speed things along. This might include things like following another character to an agreed upon location or cooperating in a mutually beneficial task. Whatever the action, the other player must give you express permission to do so.
God-Moding As it sounds, god-moding is when your character becomes all powerful or all knowing. Here’s an example.
Roleplayer 1 cora sniffed the air, hoping to smell prey. her ears flattened as she scented a badger. she unsheathed her claws in fear, hoping the beast wasnt close to her. sadly, it was behind her. she yelped in fear as the beast growled at her.
Roleplayer 2 littlefoot raced towards the beast, no fear in her mind. she lept on the badger's back before biting it's neck, and the beast flailed wildly. she killed it quite quickly, with no wounds on her luckily. '' are you okay? '' she mewed.
roleplayer 2 had good intentions when she tried to save cora, but it's completely unrealistic. a badger normally needs five to six cats to take down one, but littlefoot took it down. and without injuries would be quite hard with how much cats need to take down one badger.
but god-moding doesn't always mean physically. it can apply to knowledge as well. here's an example.
Roleplayer 1 she narrowed her eyes at the newcomer, even though she seemed nice. she had been fooled before, and she would never would again. '' please leave me alone. '' she mewed.
Roleplayer 2 '' no you don't! even if you were fooled by false kindness before, you can trust me! '' she purred happily. '' you dont have to be lonely anymore! ''
roleplayer 2's character couldnt have possibly known cora's past. this is the first time they met, after all. your character should have a very limited knowledge on somebody else's character, especially if they just met.
Your character should not be able to see through every lie they are told or instantly know when others are in trouble. Keep in mind the strengths and weaknesses of your character, as well as those of other characters. If a character you meet has a talent of being a good liar, then it’s less likely that your character will pick up on it. If your character is too trusting they might believe lies that aren’t even very convincing. Allowing your characters to make mistakes or be mislead can add a lot of interesting drama and makes your character more interesting and relatable.

Overview of your Characterit's really important to have a good overview on your character!
Warrior Cat Names since this is a warrior cat roleplay site, here's the basics for these! the warrior cat name should really reflect on their character, and their personality and a bit of their history. slashclaw would be a good name for a cat with a sly personality, and good fighting skills. slashclaw would NOT be a good name for a sweet tom.
but remember the basics! the suffix -kit is for kittens. once they become six moons, they become an apprentice with the suffix -paw. once they finish their training, they get their warrior, medicine cat, or keeper names. they can have many suffixes, and a few are listed here. there is a rare chance of becoming deputy and then leader, and once they are a leader they get their prefix -star. please note though that some elders have a name change because of scars and such.
prefixes are very important, even more than the suffixes. a light gray cat that's blind may be lostkit, to be losteyes, or something about their fur. a black kit would NOT be lightkit.
Loner/kittypet/rogue names a name reflects the cat's personality and history. a kittypet might have a human name like ''james.'' a loner or rouge name might have something that ahs to do with nature like ''willow'' and ''brook.''
Age ages are very important, and reflect on the characters personality. a kit would probably not know a lot of things and be very playful. an apprentice might be a lot like a kit, but a bit more mature. a warrior would probably be very mature. a leader would probably be brave, but worry for thier clan-mates. a medicine cat would probably be calm. a keeper would probably be wise.
Gender/Sexuality The importance of a character’s identification with his/her gender and sexuality has become more and more relevant over the years. Only a few years ago people would simply be parted into male and female. Your roleplay characters can be whoever you imagine them to be, they don't have to share the same gender/sexuality as yourself.
Rank ranks are important. they should reflect on the character's personality like a rude cat probably won't be a keeper or a medicine cat. the rank also depends on the age, you wouldn't see a kitten as a warrior or a new warrior as a leader.
Family/Friends/Mates now here's the important stuff. if the family is supprotive, your cat might try to grasp hard things. if the family ignores them, they might want attention all the time. friends also change the cat. your cat can not be friends anymore if they dont want to, or be mates if they feel they dont feel the same way anymore or never did.

Details, Details, Details! details, the thing that makes every character unique in some way. here's some things that you should note when writing your details!
Appearance whenever you think of details, appearance is the last thing you think of. but it's actually quite important! think: your character is a black tom with scars running down his back. what do you think of? a rude, outcast like character with good fighting skills.
appearances make people assume what the character would be like. it's important to have an appearance that would most likely match the personality. somebody who deosn't pick fights might not have scars. a rude cat would rpobably have picked fights and so have scars. but sometimes you should make them seem a bit different than they look, but make sure to state so clearly they arent what they think you are, or you'll have lots of confusion.
Personality the most important of them all! personalities are the most difficult too, as you want your character to be interesting. i suggest something like they cant fight without shrieking at blood, or they have a mental illness of some sort. make it relatable, make lots of little flaws and quirks. if they do have a mental illness, research it first. it may make people mad if they have the illness/know somebody with the illness. research the symptoms. see how their personality would most likely be.
a step to first make a character is thinking of three to four personality traits. here are a few: 1. creative, calm, dreamer 2. independent, ambitious, cold
now think a bit more about it. what sparks their creativity? how come they're so calm? why? do they day-dream? how often? what do they day-dream of? what's their definition of independent? why are they this way? why are they ambitious? what made them so cold? part of their history?
if you answer these, you may get more attached to your character, and maybe you can write detailed posts quite easily just by connecting with their personality. one good tip: make it relatable. maybe others might like their character if they can relate. if you can relate, you'll grow more attatched.
History our backstories make us who we are. if you were bullied in school, you'd probably think very low of yourself. so make sure your personality ties with their history.
a lot of things i see in histories are both of their parents dying. in reality, it happens, but not as much as it does in roleplays. there's nothing wrong with having a happy family, all alive and happy! even if you want your character to be special, dont do anything like that. maybe your parents left to be kittypets. maybe you never met them, they abandoned you. maybe you had a broken, shattered family with your character's parents fighting, eventually making them leaving the clan.
